Outside of the two dozen people lucky enough to find the iPhone Bluetooth Headset at various Apple Stores around the country a week or two ago (Most Apple stores got 2 to 3?) and the small hand full of big-wig bloggers who get products sent to them early to review, I haven’t seen a single thing on The Internet about Apple’s newest iPhone accessory.

I got mine this morning, it actually arrived a day early- FedEx is notoriously lazy around here so believe me, I was blown away. If you have ever bought an iPod, iMac, or any other Apple product you’re no doubt aware of how over-engineered the packaging is. Apple’s iPhone Bluetooth Headset is no different.




Great, it looks cool, the box is neat- but how does it work?

It seems like all the spam bots on The Internet now days have switched from “PUNCH OSAMA IN THE FACE TO WIN A FREE PS3!” to “PUNCH GEORGE W. IN THE FACE TO GET A FREE IPHONE!” The iPhone is a pretty sweet device, the only problem is that is has quite a hefty price tag for a mobile phone. Fortunately, a “loophole” (if you’d even call it that) exists to get one for close to free if you’re currently eligible for an equipment upgrade with Cingular/AT&T or you’re out of contract with your current provider and can switch to Cingular/AT&T.
(This “guide” assumes you have a GSM phone (Cingular/AT&T or T-Mobile), since CDMA devices lack SIM cards their resale value isn’t that high because of what a pain it is to switch phones.)
Getting a close to free iPhone will take about a week or two, depending on your luck with Cingular/AT&T customer support representatives’ willingness to help. As usual, when dealing with anyone in a call center it really is hit or miss.
